Never Burn a Candle at Both Ends

EDITORS COMMENTS
: A Timeless British Proverb Illustrated in the 1890s This evocative black and white lantern slide depicts a thoughtful man, deep in contemplation, as he scratches his head while holding a candle that is burning at both ends. The image is a poignant representation of the well-known British proverb, "Never burn a candle at both ends," a phrase that continues to resonate with audiences today. The lantern slide is part of the extensive "Sayings" collection in Box 197 of the Boswell Collection, which was created by C.H. Spurgeon (1834-1892), a renowned British Particular Baptist preacher. Spurgeon's "John Ploughman's Pictures" series, which includes this slide, aimed to illustrate popular sayings and proverbs through visual storytelling. The image of the man with the burning candle is a powerful reminder of the importance of moderation and balance in life. The candle, a symbol of life and its finite nature, is meant to burn evenly to last as long as possible. Burning it at both ends, however, signifies the wasteful and unsustainable use of resources, ultimately leading to a quicker demise. This intriguing lantern slide, created in the late 19th century, offers a glimpse into the rich history of British sayings, proverbs, and the art of visual storytelling. The image, with its timeless message, continues to inspire and captivate viewers, making it a cherished piece of historical significance.
