EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative oil on canvas painting captures the elderly Field Marshal Sir Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), as he contemplatively surveys the battlefield of Waterloo in 1840. The scene, depicted in a full-length, back view, shows the Duke standing beside his horse, his right hand holding the reins at the saddle. The painting, created by Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786-1846), is believed to represent an imaginary event rather than an actual record of the Duke's actions following the famous Battle of Waterloo in 1815, which marked the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The Duke, dressed in his military uniform, is shown in deep thought, perhaps reflecting on the momentous events that transpired on this hallowed ground just over two decades prior. The painting's sentiment is intended to evoke a sense of reverence for the Duke's military prowess and leadership during one of the most pivotal moments in European history. The use of rich, earthy tones and the dramatic lighting further emphasizes the solemnity of the scene, as the Duke's steely gaze seems to pierce the very soul of the viewer. The painting, created in 1840, serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Duke of Wellington and his role in shaping the course of European history during the Napoleonic Wars.
