EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic group portrait captures a pivotal moment in American history: the first African American senator and representatives serving in the United States Congress. The image features six esteemed men who broke racial barriers and paved the way for future political representation: Robert C. De Large, Jefferson H. Long, Hiram Rhodes Revels, Benjamin S. Turner, Josiah T. Walls, Joseph H. Rainey, and Richard H. Cain. The photograph was taken during the 41st and 42nd Congresses, which convened between 1869 and 1873. Hiram Rhodes Revels, a native of Mississippi, was the first African American senator, serving from February 25, 1870, to March 3, 1871. He was appointed to fill the vacant seat left by Jefferson Davis, who had resigned to join the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. The five representatives in the photograph – Robert C. De Large, Jefferson H. Long, Benjamin S. Turner, Josiah T. Walls, and Joseph H. Rainey – were all elected to serve in the House of Representatives during the 42nd Congress. De Large represented South Carolina, Long represented Louisiana, Turner represented Virginia, Walls represented Mississippi, and Rainey represented South Carolina again. This powerful image symbolizes the progress and determination of African Americans during the Reconstruction era, a time when the country was rebuilding after the Civil War. It serves as a reminder of the significant strides made towards racial equality and the importance of representation in government.
