EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from 1919, a British biplane soars over the ancient city of Fallujah, located on the banks of the Euphrates River in Iraq. The plane, a testament to the technological advancements of the time, is returning to the nearby town of Hit with much-needed supplies. Hanging from the tail of the aircraft are two long strings, each adorned with a collection of dead fowls, unplucked and ready for distribution. The scene is a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by those in the aftermath of the Mesopotamian campaign during World War I. With markets depleted and resources scarce, creative solutions were necessary to ensure the survival of the local population. The use of an aeroplane to transport livestock, however unconventional, was a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of those involved. The British presence in Iraq was a significant chapter in the history of the Middle East. The Mesopotamian campaign, which lasted from 1914 to 1918, saw the British Empire establish control over the region, leading to the creation of the Mandate of Mesopotamia. This period was marked by political instability, economic hardships, and cultural exchange. In this image, we see a moment of respite amidst the chaos, as the biplane, piloted by an unnamed British officer, carries essential supplies and a source of sustenance to the people of Hit. The fowls, tied together in a makeshift fashion, trail behind the plane, creating a striking contrast against the clear blue sky. This photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Prints Online collection, offers a glimpse into the rich and complex history of the Middle East during a pivotal time in world history.
