Francois Henri Comte de La Motte, a prominent French aristocrat, is depicted in this portrait from circa 1785. La Motte's life became intertwined with one of the most scandalous episodes in French history: the Diamond Necklace Affair. His wife, Jeanne de La Motte, played a central role in this intrigue, masterminding the scheme with the cardinal de Rohan. The Diamond Necklace Affair began when Jeanne, desperate for money and desiring the attention of the cardinal, conspired with a jeweler to create an extravagant diamond necklace for her. She convinced the cardinal that the queen, Marie Antoinette, had requested the necklace as a gift, and the cardinal agreed to pay for it. However, the necklace was never delivered to the queen, and Jeanne, in collusion with the jeweler, claimed that it had been stolen. The cardinal, believing he had been swindled, demanded restitution, leading to a series of public scandals and investigations. The affair, which unfolded between 1785 and 1786, brought widespread public attention to the extravagance and corruption of the French aristocracy. Ultimately, Jeanne was exposed as the mastermind behind the scheme, and the cardinal was publicly humiliated. The Diamond Necklace Affair contributed to the growing discontent with the monarchy and the eventual French Revolution.
