EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative ninth-century image captures the essence of Frankish nobility during the formative years of European history. The central figure, dressed in regal attire and adorned with a crown, represents King Charles the Bald (823-877), ruler of the Western Franks, who inhabited present-day France. To his right, a high official, clad in a long tunic and cloak, is shown in a posture of respect, indicating his position of authority and influence within the Frankish court. Two elegant ladies, dressed in the fashion of the time, complete the scene. Their flowing robes, adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant colors, reflect the wealth and sophistication of the Frankish nobility. The ladies' hairstyles, featuring braids and intricate coifs, are a testament to the meticulous care and attention given to personal appearance during this period. The East Franks, who inhabited present-day Germany, are also represented in this image, as evidenced by the similarities in the dress and hairstyles of the ladies. The Frankish nobility played a crucial role in shaping the political, cultural, and social landscape of Europe during the ninth century. This print offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of their world, providing a fascinating window into the past.
