EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the noble visage of George Carew, 7th Baron Etchingham and 1st Earl of Totnes (1555-1629). Carew was an accomplished courtier, statesman, soldier, diplomat, and administrator, who made significant contributions to English politics and society during the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean eras. Born into an aristocratic family, Carew rose to prominence under Queen Elizabeth I, serving as her ambassador to the courts of France and Spain. He also held various important positions within the English government, including Master of the Rolls and Lord Chamberlain of the Household. Carew is perhaps best known for his strong stance in Ireland, where he served as Lord Deputy from 1605 to 1610. During his tenure, he worked to quell rebellions, improve the administration of justice, and promote economic development. He was also a close friend and ally of the renowned explorer and courtier, Sir Walter Raleigh. Despite his many accomplishments, Carew's career was not without controversy. He was involved in several political intrigues and was criticized for his harsh treatment of Irish rebels. Nevertheless, he remained a respected figure in English politics until his death in 1629. This image, which captures Carew's distinguished appearance and air of authority, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who played a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of early modern England.
