EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, showcases two majestic birds of prey: the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) and the White-tailed Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla). The illustration is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie," a comprehensive work on zoology authored by the renowned naturalist Georges Cuvier. The Golden Eagle, depicted on the left, is one of the most iconic birds of prey, known for its distinctive golden feathers on the nape of its neck. This bird of prey is a resident of Eurasia and North America, and is renowned for its incredible hunting abilities and powerful talons. On the right, the White-tailed Sea Eagle (also known as the White-tailed Fish Eagle) is depicted with its distinctive white tail feathers and broad wings. This bird is native to the Northern Hemisphere, particularly in Europe, Asia, and North America. It is an apex predator, feeding mainly on fish, but also on waterbirds, mammals, and carrion. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving was executed by Coutant, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this engraving are a testament to the artists' mastery of their craft and the high standards of natural history illustration during this period.
