EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant portrait, Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia, son of Grand Duke Michael Nikolayevich and first cousin of Tsar Nicholas II, stands proudly in his military uniform. The photograph was taken in 1899, during a time when Michael was a frequent guest of the British royal family. Michael, who was also a first cousin of the Duchess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (Grand Duchess Marie of Russia), was married morganatically to Countess Natasha Torby. They lived together at Keele Hall in Staffordshire, England. During the first half of the Great War, Michael resided at Kenwood House in Hampstead, London, where he was a prominent figure in British high society. In this image, he is seen as a guest of the Prince of Wales, King Edward VII, at Semley. Michael Mikhailovich was born on October 29, 1861, in Moscow, Russia. He served in the Russian military and held various high-ranking positions within the imperial court. After the Russian Revolution, Michael and his family were forced to flee Russia and live in exile. Michael passed away on December 13, 1929, in Paris, France. This portrait captures a moment in time when Michael Mikhailovich was at the height of his social status, both in Russia and in Britain. The photograph is a testament to his royal lineage and his connection to the European aristocracy of the late 19th century.
