EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait of Charles Hardinge, 1st Baron Hardinge of Penshurst, graced the cover of The Graphic newspaper in 1910, marking the momentous occasion of his appointment as the new Viceroy of India. Lord Hardinge, a distinguished British diplomat and statesman, assumed office at a time when India was a jewel in the crown of the British Empire. Born on 20 June 1858, Hardinge's career in diplomacy began in earnest when he was appointed as the British Ambassador to Russia in 1905. His diplomatic prowess and political acumen soon came to the attention of the British government, leading to his appointment as Viceroy of India in 1910. The portrait, drawn from life by the renowned artist Arthur Garratt, captures the stern yet resolute expression on Hardinge's face, reflecting the gravity of the role he was about to undertake. The image of the new Viceroy, dressed in formal attire and adorned with the insignia of his office, conveyed a sense of imperial authority and power. The Graphic, a leading British weekly newspaper at the time, granted a special sitting to capture Hardinge's likeness, and the resulting portrait was prominently displayed on the cover of the newspaper, signaling the importance of the appointment and the significance of India to the British Empire. Lord Hardinge served as Viceroy of India until 1916, during which time he oversaw the implementation of various reforms aimed at modernizing the Indian administration and improving the lives of its people. His tenure was marked by a commitment to maintaining peace and order in the vast and diverse subcontinent, and his legacy continues to be remembered in Indian history as a period of stability and progress under British rule.
