EDITORS COMMENTS
August 1963: The Most Daring and Fruitful Mail Robbery in English History - A Page from The Illustrated London News The Great Train Robbery of August 8, 1963, went down in history as one of the most audacious and successful crimes in English history. The image above, taken from The Illustrated London News, captures the aftermath of this daring heist, which saw a gang of 15 robbers steal over £2.6 million (approximately £60 million in today's value) from a mail train near Leatherslade Farm in Buckinghamshire. The photograph shows the scene at Leatherslade Farm, where the robbers had laid their trap. The farm, which was owned by Ronnie Biggs, one of the key suspects in the robbery, had been used as a base for planning the crime. The arrest of the suspects was a major news event in August 1963. The image shows a group of policemen, some in uniform and others in plain clothes, as they apprehended the robbers. The criminals had managed to evade capture for several days, but their luck ran out when they were identified through a combination of forensic evidence and witness statements. The Great Train Robbery was a turning point in British criminal history. It led to significant changes in the way that the police and the criminal justice system dealt with serious crime, and it remains a fascinating chapter in the annals of English law enforcement.
