EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite gouache painting, titled "Grus anigone, Sarus Crane Eggs," is a captivating work of art from the 19th century Jardine Collection. The artist, unknown to us, masterfully depicted the speckled Sarus crane eggs nestled among the long, grassy stalks. Sarus cranes (Grus antigone) are the largest flying bird in the world, with a height of up to five feet. They are native to the Asian subcontinent and are known for their distinctive red crown and blue facial skin. This illustration is annotated with the scientific name of the bird and the species of crane, "Grus anigone," indicating its origins in the field of ornithology. Sir William Jardine (1800-1874), a Scottish surgeon and naturalist, was a significant figure in the scientific community during the 19th century. He was a prolific collector and contributor to the field of natural history, with a particular focus on ornithology. The Jardine Collection, which includes this painting, is a testament to his passion and dedication. The painting's meticulous attention to detail and use of gouache, a water-based paint, showcases the artist's skill and the techniques popular during the time. The speckled pattern on the eggs is rendered with remarkable accuracy, providing a glimpse into the natural world of the Sarus crane. This painting is a beautiful example of the art of ornithology during the 19th century and a valuable addition to any collection of natural history or art.
