EDITORS COMMENTS
November 5, 1853: Guy Fawkes Night in Brighton, England. In this historic photograph from the Mary Evans Picture Library, a crowd gathers to witness the traditional Tar Barrel Rolling ceremony on the streets of Brighton. The annual event, which commemorates the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, sees participants rolling blazing tar barrels through the town, lit only by the flickering light of sparklers. The origins of Tar Barrel Rolling in Brighton are unclear, but it is believed to have begun in the early 19th century. The custom may have been inspired by the legend of Guy Fawkes and his attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. The barrels, filled with tar and pitch, were rolled down the streets to symbolize the burning of the effigy of Guy Fawkes. Despite the potential danger, the tradition continues to this day, attracting thousands of spectators each year. The photograph captures the excitement and anticipation of the crowd as they prepare to witness the barrels being set alight and rolled down the steep hills of Brighton. The glow of the sparklers and the flickering flames of the tar barrels create a mesmerizing and otherworldly scene, transporting us back in time to a bygone era. This photograph is a testament to the enduring power of tradition and the importance of preserving historical customs. It also serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that continues to shape the identity of Brighton and the surrounding area. As the barrels roll down the hill, the past comes alive, and for a moment, we are transported back to the streets of 1853.
