EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the final moments of HMS Majestic, a British predreadnought battleship launched in 1895, as she sinks in the Aegean Sea during the First World War. The Majestic served valiantly before and during the early part of the conflict, including at the Dardanelles campaign. On 27 May 1915, the ship was hit by a single torpedo from a Turkish TB 14 submarine, causing significant damage and eventually leading to her capsizing. In the background of this powerful photograph, other ships can be seen attempting to aid the stricken vessel, but it was too late. The sinking of HMS Majestic was a significant loss for the British Navy and marked a turning point in the Gallipoli campaign. This poignant image serves as a stark reminder of the brutal realities of war at sea during World War 1.
