EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts three edible mushroom species belonging to the Honey Mushroom complex: Armillaria mellea, Agaricus melleus, and Armillaria tabescens. The image is taken from Fritz Leuba's seminal work, "Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms," published in Neuchatel, Switzerland, in 1890. Leuba, a renowned mycologist and artist from Neuchatel, Switzerland, meticulously documented and illustrated these fascinating fungi. The Honey Mushrooms, represented here, are a diverse group of edible and medicinal fungi. Armillaria mellea, also known as the "Honey Agaric," is a large, bright orange-yellow mushroom with a honey-like scent and a cap that becomes flattened with age. Agaricus melleus, or the "Prairie Parasol," is a brown-capped mushroom with a distinctive white veil that covers the cap when young. Both species are widely distributed and are prized for their edible qualities. The third mushroom depicted, Armillaria tabescens, is also known as the "Bootlace Fungus" due to its distinctive root-like rhizomorphs. This species forms large, white to tan fruiting bodies that grow in clusters at the base of trees. While not as commonly consumed as Armillaria mellea and Agaricus melleus, it is still edible and has traditional medicinal uses. This beautiful and intricately detailed chromolithograph not only showcases the allure of these edible Honey Mushrooms but also highlights the remarkable work of Fritz Leuba, a pioneering figure in mycology and illustration.
