EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1915, depicts patients at the Quex House garden of the Quex Park VAD Hospital in Birchington-on-Sea, England, engaging in a lighthearted game. Dressed in shirtsleeves, they attempt to eat apples suspended from a horizontal line using only a string. The playful scene is watched intently by VAD nurses, civilians, and other patients, including an intriguing figure in a top hat and tailcoat, holding a rifle. The gardens of Quex House provided invaluable opportunities for relaxation, games, and diversions for the patients during their recovery. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. It was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, under the command of Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, who founded the Powell-Cotton Museum. The hospital offered a respite from the harsh realities of the war, allowing patients to enjoy simple pleasures and moments of camaraderie. The image encapsulates the spirit of hope and healing that permeated the hospital grounds during those challenging times.
