EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 15th century coloured pen and ink drawing depicts a Jewish religious procession as documented in the handwritten chronicles of the Council of Constance by Ulrich von Richental. The Council of Constance, held from 1414 to 1418, was a significant event in the history of the Catholic Church, and von Richental's chronicles provide valuable insights into the religious and social life of the time. The procession is illustrated in great detail in this chromolithograph from Hefner-Alteneck's "Costumes, Artworks and Appliances from the early Middle Ages to the end of the 18th Century." The drawing, which was both illustrated by Hefner-Alteneck and lithographed by C. Regnier, offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and customs of the Jewish community during the medieval period. The procession features numerous individuals dressed in traditional Jewish garb, including long, flowing robes and distinctive head coverings. Some carry Torah scrolls or other religious objects, while others play musical instruments or lead the procession with banners and flags. The intricate details of the clothing, as well as the various accessories and appliances depicted, provide valuable information for scholars of medieval Jewish history and fashion. Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck (1811-1903) was a renowned German archeologist, art historian, and illustrator. He served as the director of the Bavarian National Museum from 1868 until 1886, and his work on medieval costumes, art, and appliances remains an important contribution to the field. This illustration is just one example of his meticulous attention to detail and his dedication to preserving the history of the past.
