John Douglas Campbell, the 9th Duke of Argyll (1845-1914), is depicted in this photograph taken during his tenure as Marquis of Lorne in the year 1870. Born on March 25, 1845, in London, England, Campbell was the eldest son of the 8th Duke of Argyll and Lady Elizabeth Sackville-West. He succeeded to the dukedom in 1870 upon the death of his father. The Duke is seen here wearing the traditional Scottish attire of a tartan kilt, sporran, and a ginger-colored waistcoat, which adds to the historical significance of the image. The Duke's hands are placed on his hips, exuding an air of confidence and authority.
