EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored illustration, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri with text by Camille Bonnard, transports us back to the first half of the 16th century and the court of King Edward III of England during the 14th century. The image showcases the majesty and grandeur of the English monarch, resplendent in his full armor. King Edward III, dressed in a blue cap trimmed with ermine, wears a red tunic bordered with gold. The king's regal attire is adorned with symbols of power and authority. The blue cap, a symbol of royalty, is trimmed with the fur of the ermine, an animal considered to be a harbinger of good fortune. The red tunic, a traditional color associated with the English monarchy, is bordered with gold, signifying wealth and power. The king's crown, taken from the monument to Henry III, sits proudly on his head, its gold and precious stones glinting in the light. In his right hand, he holds a scepter, the ornate staff taken from paintings of Richard II. The throne, with its intricate design and rich fabrics, is taken from an ancient manuscript. This illustration offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the English court during the 14th century, a time of political and artistic flourishing. The intricate details of the armor, the rich fabrics, and the regal symbols all come together to create a powerful and evocative image of a king in his prime.
