EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 981 from the John Reeves Collection of Botanical Drawings, housed in the Botany Library at the Natural History Museum in London, presents an exquisite illustration of the Licuala sp. (Arecales, Commelinidae, Licualaceae), a stunning fern-like palm from Canton, China, dating back to the nineteenth century. This magnificent work of art, executed with meticulous attention to detail, showcases the intricate structure of the Licuala palm's frond. The Licuala palm, a member of the Monocotyledon class within the Angiospermae, Magnoliophyta, and Pteridophyta kingdoms, is characterized by its fan-shaped fronds and elegant inflorescence. In this illustration, we can observe the rich green coloration of the frond's rachis and pinnae, as well as the delicate veination that runs along their length. The frond's pinnules, arranged in a regular pattern along the pinnae, are also depicted with remarkable accuracy. John Reeves, the illustrator, masterfully captured the essence of this beautiful plant, which was a popular subject among botanical artists of the time. The nineteenth century was a period of great exploration and discovery in the field of botany, and collections such as the one held by the Natural History Museum played a crucial role in documenting the diverse plant life of the world. This illustration of the Licuala sp. serves not only as a testament to the artistic skill of its creator but also as an invaluable resource for scientific research. Its inclusion in the John Reeves Collection ensures that future generations will continue to be inspired by the beauty and complexity of the natural world.
