EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1904, showcases the London, Chatham and Dover Railways (LCDR) terminus at Victoria Station in London, standing proudly next to the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) station. The image offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, prior to the complete re-modelling of the LCDR station facade that took place in 1906. The architectural design of the LCDR station was the work of A. W. Blomfield, who was the architect for the South Eastern Railway Company (SECR) at the time. The station was built in Portland stone, and its grandeur is evident in the intricate details of the architecture. The LCDR station, on the left side of the image, boasts a distinctive frontage with large arched windows and ornate stonework. On the right side of the photograph, the LBSCR station stands in contrast, with its red brick facade and more understated design. The two railway companies operated independently, but this image illustrates the close proximity of their stations in the heart of London. The photograph also provides a glimpse into the bustling activity of the railway stations, with trains and passengers going about their business. The image is a testament to the importance of rail transport in the early 20th century, and the role it played in connecting people and places across the country. This photograph is a valuable historical record, offering a unique perspective on the railway stations at Victoria in London during the early 1900s. The complete re-modelling of the LCDR station facade in 1906 would forever change the look of this iconic transport hub, making this image all the more precious as a record of its history.
