EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures an early foam tender of the London Fire Brigade (LFB) stationed at Southwark Headquarters in the early 1910s. The advent of motor vehicles brought new challenges to firefighting, as fires involving petroleum and other flammable liquids became increasingly common. Traditional methods using water proved ineffective, leading fire services to adopt innovative solutions. In this image, we see a team of dedicated firefighters gathered around the foam tender, ready to respond to emergencies. Dressed in their Edwardian-era uniforms, they exude a sense of professionalism and determination. The tender, a significant investment for the LFB at the time, was fashioned specifically to address the unique challenges posed by motor vehicle fires. The vehicle, an essential part of the LFB's expanding fleet, was designed to carry and dispense bulk foam, an effective means of smothering larger fires. The use of foam was a game-changer in firefighting, as it could put out fires more efficiently than water, especially those involving petroleum products. The photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the early days of motorized firefighting, a critical period in the evolution of the London Fire Brigade. As the transport sector continued to grow, so too did the need for advanced firefighting equipment and techniques. This early foam tender, with its dedicated crew, represents a pivotal moment in the history of firefighting in London.
