EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, a London Fire Brigade Breathing Apparatus (BA) control board is prominently displayed on the dashboard of a front-line fire engine. The BA control board is an essential piece of equipment carried on all London Fire Brigade fire engines that carry breathing apparatus. This board ensures the effective and safe management of BA usage during firefighting incidents. The BA control board is a recording and service chart designed to keep track of important information related to the BA gear carried by each firefighter. When firefighters enter an incident in BA, their details, including their name, BA number, and the time they entered the incident, are recorded on the control board. The BA tally, which indicates the number of BA sets available and in use, is also placed on the board. The control board also records the time each BA set has been in use, allowing fire officers to monitor the length of time each firefighter has been wearing their BA and ensure they do not exceed the recommended safe limits. Additionally, the general location of each BA set is recorded, providing valuable information in case of emergencies or if BA sets need to be accounted for during the incident. The BA control board is an essential part of the London Fire Brigade's procedures for managing BA usage during incidents. The use of such a system ensures that all BA sets are accounted for, reducing the risk of loss or misplacement, and that firefighters are kept safe during their operations. This photograph, taken in the 1990s, captures a snapshot of the London Fire Brigade's commitment to safety and effective firefighting practices.
