EDITORS COMMENTS
Madeline of Fort Reno: A Military Romantic Play, starring Long Brothers, Pawnee Bill, and May Lillie - the sensation of the late 19th century. This photograph captures the essence of a groundbreaking theatrical production that took the Western world by storm. The image features portraits of the main actors: W. Hillswell Long, JEH. Long, May Lillie, and Major Gordon W. Lillie. Dating back to approximately 1897, this photograph offers a glimpse into the world of Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show, which was known for its daring performances and authentic portrayals of frontier life. In this particular production, the Long Brothers and May Lillie brought the military romantic play, "Madeline of Fort Reno," to life. The play, set at Fort Reno in Oklahoma Territory, told the story of a young woman named Madeline who falls in love with a soldier, despite the objections of her father, the fort commander. The production was a huge success, with its combination of drama, music, and military spectacle resonating with audiences. The Long Brothers, Pawnee Bill, and May Lillie were all prominent figures in the Wild West Show circuit. W. Hillswell Long served as the show's manager, while JEH. Long was an accomplished sharpshooter and performer. May Lillie, an accomplished actress, played the lead role of Madeline. Major Gordon W. Lillie, May's husband and a former Union Army officer, added authenticity to the production as a military advisor and performer. This photograph is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Wild West and the power of live entertainment to transport audiences to another time and place.
