Lord and Lady Weymouth at Antibes

Viscount Weymouth, only son and heir of the Marquess of Bath, pictured on honeymoon at Cap d Antibes on the French Riviera with his new wife, the former Hon. Daphne Vivian. Photograph shows them on their way to the plage armed with towels and a fur rug - in case they feel chilly after their dip. Coincidentally, Ernst Dryden, the fashion illustrator drew the couple (see image no. 10055043) and this photograph in The Sketch was later discovered by the Mary Evans team and found to be almost identical. Date: 1927

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph from 1927, Viscount Weymouth and his new wife, the former Hon. Daphne Vivian, are seen making their way to the Plage at Cap d'Antibes on the French Riviera, armed with towels and a fur rug for a chilly dip in the Mediterranean Sea. The young couple, who were on their honeymoon, were captured in this candid moment as they strolled along the sandy beach, their dressing gowns billowing in the breeze. The aristocratic pair, Lord Weymouth and Lady Weymouth, were the only son and heir of the Marquess of Bath and his wife. Their elegant appearance and refined demeanor were a common sight in the high society circles of the time. The French Riviera, with its glamorous allure and idyllic climate, was a popular destination for the British aristocracy during the 1920s, and Cap d'Antibes was a particularly favored spot. Interestingly, this photograph was later discovered to have an unexpected connection to the world of fashion illustration. The renowned fashion illustrator, Ernst Dryden, had drawn the couple in a similar pose for The Sketch magazine, and the photograph and illustration were found to be remarkably similar. This fascinating discovery underscores the enduring allure of the French Riviera and the timeless elegance of the aristocratic lifestyle. This evocative image offers a glimpse into a bygone era, transporting us back to a time of glamour, romance, and the simple pleasures of a seaside holiday. The golden sands of Cap d'Antibes, the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean, and the elegant couple in their dressing gowns, all combine to create a scene that is as captivating today as it was nearly a century ago.
