EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a Marimba or Zulu Harmonicon from South Africa, as illustrated by William Gibb for A.J. Hipkins' Musical Instruments, Historic, Rare and Unique, published in Edinburgh in 1888. Alfred James Hipkins (1826-1903) was a renowned English musicologist who dedicated his career to the study of the history of the pianoforte and other musical instruments. The Marimba, also known as the Zulu Harmonicon, is a percussion instrument indigenous to Southern Africa. It is composed of ten bars, each tuned to a different pitch, and is played with wooden mallets. The resonators of this particular Marimba are made of gourds, which amplify the sound. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this chromolithograph capture the beauty and complexity of the Marimba. The instrument is depicted with great accuracy, allowing us to appreciate its unique design and craftsmanship. The gourd resonators are arranged in a geometric pattern, adding to the visual appeal of the image. This illustration provides a glimpse into the rich musical history of South Africa and the significance of the Marimba in its cultural heritage. The Marimba has been an essential part of traditional music for centuries, and its distinctive sound continues to captivate audiences around the world. The Marimba's inclusion in Hipkins' publication highlights the global reach of musical exploration during the late 19th century. Hipkins' dedication to documenting rare and unique musical instruments showcases the diversity and complexity of music history, making this chromolithograph a valuable historical artifact.
