EDITORS COMMENTS
Menage a Trois / Gavarni: A Wife with Two Husbands (1850) - An intriguing and thought-provoking image from the 19th century, this print by French caricaturist, Honoré Daumier, under the pseudonym of Gavarni, captures a unique and unconventional family dynamic. The title "Menage a Trois," a term originating from France, translates to "household of three," and was used to describe living arrangements involving multiple partners. In this depiction, a serene and composed woman sits between her two husbands, all three appearing relaxed and content. The scene challenges societal norms and expectations of monogamy and marriage during the time period. The image, created in 1850, is a testament to the artistic and social climate of the era. Daumier's masterful use of satire and wit is evident in the subtle expressions and body language of the figures, adding layers of meaning and interpretation. The setting, with its ornate furnishings and elegant decor, further emphasizes the contrast between the unconventional family arrangement and the opulence of the era. This historical print offers a glimpse into the complexities and nuances of relationships and family structures during the 19th century. It invites us to question societal norms and explore the human capacity for love and companionship beyond traditional boundaries. The relaxed and content expressions of the three individuals in the image serve as a reminder that love and happiness can take many forms, and that the most important factor is the emotional connection and fulfillment of those involved.
