EDITORS COMMENTS
Mersin, a Historic City on the Mediterranean Coast of Southern Turkey: The Arrival of French Troops in December 1918 This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of Mersin, a large and bustling city located on the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey and serving as the capital of the Mersin Province. With its strategic location and busy port, Mersin has been a coveted prize for conquerors throughout history. In December 1918, Mersin became the site of a significant military campaign as French troops debarked from their ships to occupy the region of Cilicia. The city had been under the control of the Ottoman Empire, but following the end of World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the Allied powers sought to establish a presence in the region. The arrival of the French troops marked the beginning of a period of foreign occupation that would last until 1920. Mersin had a rich and complex history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to prehistoric times and occupation by various major powers throughout the centuries, including the Selcuk Turks, Mongols, Crusaders, and Armenians. The photograph shows the French soldiers disembarking from their ships, ready to begin their occupation of the city. The image captures the sense of anticipation and uncertainty that would have accompanied the arrival of these foreign troops, as well as the bustling activity of the port and the rugged terrain of the coastline. The occupation of Mersin by the French and British forces was a significant moment in the history of the region, and one that would have far-reaching consequences for the people of Turkey and the broader Middle East. The Turkish Army would eventually liberate the city in 1920, marking the end of the foreign occupation and the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Mersin and the surrounding area.
