EDITORS COMMENTS
This model showcases the New General Hospital in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, designed by the esteemed local architect Cecil Burns during the 1910s. The hospital, which opened in 1934, was a significant addition to the town's healthcare infrastructure. With meticulous attention to detail, Burns crafted a modern and functional building that reflected the latest advancements in hospital design. The model, housed in a wooden drawer, offers a unique perspective of the hospital's layout, revealing its impressive scale and architectural features. The building's symmetrical design, with its central tower and wings extending outwards, exudes a sense of order and efficiency. The use of red brick and white detailing creates a striking contrast, while the large windows allow ample natural light to enter the facility. Sadly, the New General Hospital, later known as The Kent and Sussex Hospital, closed its doors in 2011 to make way for re-development. The facility is currently undergoing extensive renovation and is being transformed into residential flats. This model serves as a poignant reminder of the hospital's rich history and the architectural vision of Cecil Burns, whose designs continue to shape the built environment of Tunbridge Wells and Sussex.
