EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic Alscot Arms pub in Bermondsey, London, as it stood in July 2018 before its unfortunate demise. The corner view of the pub, with its ornate brickwork and distinctive signage, exudes a sense of history and character that is all too rare in today's urban landscapes. Located in the SE1 area of the city, the Alscot Arms was a cherished local institution, a place where friends and neighbors gathered for a pint and a chat. The pub was owned and operated by Hoare & Company Limited, a name synonymous with Bermondsey's rich brewing heritage. Sadly, by the summer of 2018, the Alscot Arms had fallen victim to the relentless march of progress. The pub was demolished, making way for ten new flats. The loss of this historic building is a reminder of the importance of preserving our architectural and cultural heritage. This photograph, taken by an unknown photographer for The National Brewery Heritage Trust, offers a poignant snapshot of a bygone era. It invites us to reflect on the stories and memories that were once associated with this beloved local watering hole. The back of the print includes details about the pub's location and its fate, adding a layer of historical context to this evocative image.
