EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Allyn House, a historic three-story dwelling located in New Plymouth, New Zealand. Built in the year 1621 by one of the Pilgrim Fathers, this architectural gem was a significant addition to the burgeoning Pilgrim colony in the early days of European settlement in the region. The Allyn House is a large, impressively constructed wood-framed building, featuring a prominent central chimney that once belched smoke into the New Plymouth sky. The ground floor boasts three square windows, while the jettied first floor adds an intriguing dimension with its overhanging design and three more square windows. The house's most striking feature is its central gable, adorned with a small square window that frames a captivating view of the surrounding landscape. The Pilgrims, who arrived in New Plymouth in 1642, were seeking religious freedom and a new life in a land far from their homeland. They brought with them a rich architectural heritage, and the Allyn House is a testament to their ingenuity and resourcefulness. The house's sturdy design reflects the harsh realities of life in the colony, while its elegant features speak to the Pilgrims' commitment to creating a home that was not only functional but also beautiful. Today, the Allyn House stands as a proud reminder of the past, a symbol of the resilience and determination of those who dared to venture into the unknown in search of a better future. This exquisite print invites us to imagine the lives of the Pilgrims who once called this magnificent house their home, and to marvel at the enduring legacy they left behind.
