Fashions to Follow
EDITORS COMMENTS
- Predictions of Future Costume Designs (1870) This satirical cartoon, titled "Fashions to Follow," published in 1870, showcases a series of outrageous and comically exaggerated fashion predictions for women's clothing and accessories. The cartoon, created by Alfred Thompson, pokes fun at the trends of the time and offers a humorous take on what the future of fashion might hold. The image features a woman, dressed in a voluminous Victorian gown, consulting a fortune teller, who is shown in the background with a crystal ball. The woman is eagerly looking at a series of bizarre fashion designs that the fortune teller is holding up, each one more extreme than the last. The first design shows a woman wearing a fur coat so large that it covers her entire body, including her face, leaving only her eyes visible. The second design features a woman wearing impossibly high heels that are so tall that they appear to be growing out of her back. The third design shows a woman wearing a helmet adorned with an extravagant amount of feathers, while the fourth design features a woman wearing a coat with a built-in dog as a fashion accessory. The woman's hairstyle is also a target of satire, with her hair styled in an extreme updo that towers high above her head. The cartoon's use of humor and satire highlights the absurdity of fashion trends and the lengths that women were willing to go to in order to stay fashionable during the Victorian era. This cartoon is a fascinating glimpse into the past and offers a humorous perspective on the evolution of fashion. It also serves as a reminder that fashion trends, no matter how extreme, are often subject to change and that the future of fashion is always uncertain.
