EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage photograph, taken in the late 19th century, transports us back in time to the White Stag Temple near Amoy Xiamen in China. The image, captured around the 1880s, showcases the architectural grandeur and cultural significance of this historic site during the Victorian era. The White Stag Temple, also known as Bai Lu Sheng Wang, is a renowned Buddhist temple nestled in the scenic hills of Xiamen, a coastal city in China's Fujian province. The temple's name is derived from the legend of a white stag that appeared to the founder of the temple, guiding him to the site. This photograph, an exquisite example of albumen printing, offers a rare glimpse into the past, revealing the intricate details of the temple's architecture. The red and gold hues of the temple's roofs and walls contrast beautifully against the lush green landscape, while the surrounding mountains and trees add depth and dimension to the image. As China underwent significant changes during the late 19th century, with the arrival of European powers and the establishment of foreign concessions, the country's traditional culture continued to thrive in places like the White Stag Temple. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage that has shaped China's past and continues to inspire and captivate us today.
