EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured woodblock engraving depicts two varieties of the vetch plant: Common Vetch, Vicia sativa, and Cow Vetch, Vicia cracca. The illustration is taken from Adam Lonicer's Krauterbuch, or Herbal, published in Frankfurt in 1557. This particular print is from a 17th century pirate edition or atlas of illustrations only, featuring captions in multiple languages including Latin, Greek, French, Italian, German, and English manuscript. Common Vetch, also known as Tare or Sylvestris Vetch, is a herbaceous plant that grows up to 60 cm tall. Its heart-shaped leaves are covered in small hairs, and it produces pink or purple pea-like flowers. Common Vetch is native to Europe and Asia and has been used for centuries for fodder, medicine, and as a cover crop. Cow Vetch, also known as Tare or Wild Vetch, is a perennial plant with hairy stems and trifoliate leaves. It produces small, pink or purple flowers and can grow up to 1 meter tall. Cow Vetch is native to Europe and Asia and was traditionally used as a fodder crop for cattle. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this botanical illustration showcase the beauty and diversity of these two vetch species. The inclusion of multiple language captions highlights the global reach of botanical knowledge during the Renaissance period. Botanical illustrations like this one played a crucial role in the development of modern medicine and botany, providing accurate records of plant species for scientific study and identification.
