EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite print showcases the renowned Coronation of the Virgin painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Fra Angelico da Fiesole, created around 1434-1435. The masterpiece, now housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris, depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary being crowned by her son, Jesus Christ, in the presence of various saints and angels. The scene is taken from the New Testament apocryphal text, the "Golden Legend," which describes Mary's assumption into heaven. The painting is characterized by its delicate use of color, intricate details, and the serene expressions of the figures. Mary, with her haloed head bowed in reverence, is clad in a blue robe and a red mantle, symbolizing her purity and royalty. Her son, Jesus, wears a golden nimbus and is depicted in profile, reaching out to place the crown on his mother's head. The saints and angels, with their halos and radiant faces, add to the sacred atmosphere of the scene. Below the painting, a portrait of Fra Angelico himself is included. The artist is shown in profile, with a serious expression and a monk's habit. The inclusion of the artist's portrait is a testament to his pride in his work and his devotion to his faith. Fra Angelico was a Dominican friar, and his religious fervor is evident in his art, which is characterized by its spiritual depth and meticulous attention to detail. This print offers a glimpse into the rich artistic and religious traditions of 15th-century Italy, and serves as a reminder of the enduring influence of Fra Angelico's masterful painting.
