EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts the Crown of Thorns, or Euphorbia milii (also known as Euphorbia bojeri), a succulent plant native to Madagascar. The image was created by Lena Lowis, a British woman artist, during her travels to India with her husband Lt.-Col. Ninian Lowis in the late 19th century. The illustration was published in Lowis's book "Familiar Indian Flowers with Coloured Plates," which was released by L. Reeve in London in 1878. The intricate detail of the thorns and the delicate petals of the Crown of Thorns' flowers are beautifully rendered in this lithograph. The plant's name is derived from the legend of the crown of thorns worn by Jesus Christ during his crucifixion. The sharp, pointed thorns of the plant have given it this name, despite the fact that it is not related to the plant traditionally believed to have provided the thorns for the crown. The handcoloured lithograph was produced by D. Blair, using an illustration by Lowis as the basis for the print. The use of handcolouring added an extra layer of detail and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning addition to any botanical collection. The Crown of Thorns remains a popular houseplant today, with its striking appearance and ability to thrive in various conditions making it a favourite among plant enthusiasts. This beautiful lithograph serves as a testament to the artistic and botanical exploration that took place during the colonial era, and the enduring beauty of the natural world.
