EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838, showcases two fascinating species of dolphins: the Dusky Dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obscurus) and the Hourglass Dolphin (Lagenorhynchus cruciger). Both dolphins belong to the family Delphinidae, and are known for their agility and playful behavior. The Dusky Dolphin, depicted on the left side of the image, is characterized by its dark, dusky gray coloration, which sets it apart from other dolphin species. Its body is streamlined for efficient swimming, and its long, pointed snout is designed for catching fish and squid. The Dusky Dolphin is found in the cooler waters of the Southern Hemisphere, from New Zealand to South America. On the right side of the image, the Hourglass Dolphin, also known as the Striped Dolphin, can be seen. This dolphin derives its name from the distinctive hourglass-shaped markings on its sides. The Hourglass Dolphin is a pelagic species, found in the tropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. It is a fast and powerful swimmer, capable of reaching speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. This beautiful illustration not only captures the physical characteristics of these two dolphin species but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating marine mammals. The intricate details of the engraving, combined with the vibrant hand-coloring, make this a truly stunning work of art and a valuable addition to any collection of zoological illustrations.
