EDITORS COMMENTS
This facsimile print depicts the first published illustration of the dodo (Raphus cucullatus), an extinct flightless bird native to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The illustration is taken from the seminal work "Voyage of Jacob Cornelis van Neck to the East Indies," published in 1601. In this image, Dutch sailors are shown fishing off the coast of Mauritius, with two intriguing creatures in the foreground: a dodo and an extinct giant tortoise, Cylindras inepta. The dodo, with its distinctive red beak, featherless head, and round body, is shown in profile, while the tortoise, with its massive size and domed carapace, is depicted in a three-quarter view. This rare and fascinating image offers a glimpse into the natural history of Mauritius during the early European exploration of the Indian Ocean. The print is a lithograph from the influential work "The Dodo and its Kindred," published in London by Reeve, Benham and Reeve in 1848, and reproduced here by Mary Evans Prints Online.
