EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases an intriguing collection of extinct fossil lamp shells, or brachiopods. Brachiopods are an ancient group of marine organisms, characterized by their distinctive shells, which resemble a combination of a scallop and a clam. The illustrated fossils include the Kirkidium knightii (1), Araxilevis intermedius (2), Uncites grifoides (3), Pentamerus knightii, Productus martini, and two Uncite grifoide specimens. These extinct species of lamp shells are represented in exquisite detail, with their intricate shell patterns and structures captured through the masterful techniques of Jean Gabriel Pretre's drawings and Stanghi's engravings. The fossil lamp shells depicted in this engraving are essential pieces of the marine fossil record, providing valuable insights into the Earth's geological past. Some of these species, such as the Pachite punteggiato and Diancora marginata, are characterized by their elaborate ornamentation, while others, like the Spinosus plagiostoma and Spinosa pachite, bear more simple shell structures. Turpin, the publisher of this work, is recognized as one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. His collaborators, Pretre and Stanghi, brought their exceptional skills to the table, resulting in this stunning and historically significant representation of extinct fossil lamp shells.
