EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1901, portrays the lively and good-humored atmosphere outside the London Hippodrome as the crowd eagerly awaits entry to the renowned theatre. The London Hippodrome, located in the heart of the city, was a popular destination for entertainment seekers, drawing large crowds with its diverse lineup of acts that included acrobats, dancers, minstrels, and musicians. The scene in this image is a microcosm of the vibrant energy that permeated the area. The queue stretches down the street, with people of all ages and backgrounds, dressed in their Sunday best, patiently waiting for their turn to enter the theatre. The anticipation is palpable as they chat and laugh with one another, creating a sense of community and shared excitement. Amidst the crowd, a group of street entertainers adds to the festive mood. A minstrel plays a lively tune on his banjo, drawing a crowd of onlookers who clap and dance along. A flower seller peddles her wares, adding a touch of color to the scene, while a chariot driver offers rides to those willing to pay a few pennies. Despite the long wait, the crowd remains in high spirits, entertained by the street performers and the camaraderie of their fellow theatre-goers. The London Hippodrome, with its promise of excitement and wonder, brings people together in a shared celebration of the joy of live entertainment.
