Great Helms and Shields with Heraldic Crests, 14th Century: A Chromolithograph from Hefner-Alteneck's Costumes, Artworks and Appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th Century This stunning chromolithograph depicts a collection of great helms and shields adorned with heraldic family crests from the 14th century. The image is taken from the seminal work "Costumes, Artworks and Appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th Century" by the renowned German museum curator, archaeologist, art historian, illustrator, and etcher, Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck. The illustration showcases a figure in medieval attire, including a jupon, a coat of arms, and a bascinet helmet, standing before an array of impressive shields and helms. The shields display a variety of heraldic crests, including the cross of St. George and the dragon, the fleur-de-lis, and the arms of Dijon. The knight wears a sword at his side, and his belt is adorned with intricate designs. One of the shields in the foreground catches the eye, as it bears the arms of Jacques de Baerze, a French knight. The shield is flanked by two other shields, one with a bouche, or mouth, design, and the other with a simple cross. The great helms, towering above the shields, are adorned with elaborate decorations, including crests and visors. This image is a testament to the rich history and artistry of the Middle Ages, and serves as a reminder of the importance of heraldry in medieval society. The chromolithograph was created by Hefner-Alteneck and lithographed by C.R. Dr. Hefner-Alteneck in 1889, and remains a valuable resource for scholars and enthusiasts of medieval art and history.
