EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts a majestic Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), also known as the Greater Kudu or Koodoo. The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library, published in Edinburgh in 1836. The illustration was created by James Stewart and engraved by Lizars. The Greater Kudu is a large antelope species native to the savannas and forests of eastern and southern Africa. They are the largest of the kudu species, with males reaching up to 1.8 meters in length and weighing up to 300 kg. They are characterized by their distinctive, spiraled horns, which can grow up to 1.2 meters long in males. The Greater Kudu's coat is a reddish-brown color with white spots and stripes, which provide excellent camouflage in their woodland habitats. They are herbivores, feeding on leaves, shoots, and fruits. Due to their large size and distinctive appearance, they are popular game animals, but their numbers have declined due to habitat loss and poaching. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the physical attributes of the Greater Kudu but also captures the essence of the natural world during the 19th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the animal to life, making it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history art.
