EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the head of a young antelope and a wild civet from French Guiana. The antelope, identified as a young "bouc bigarre," or red brocket deer, is native to South America and is characterized by its distinctive elongated ears and curved horns. The wild civet, or "civette sauvage," is a small, nocturnal mammal with a pointed snout and bushy tail. This intriguing pairing of two diverse species is a testament to the natural wonders of the world, as captured by the skilled hand of Christian Leinberger. Leinberger's illustration is taken from Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, a series of zoological illustrations published in Nuremberg in 1771. The specimens in this collection were likely part of a Wunderkammer or Cabinet of Curiosities, a precursor to modern natural history museums. The Cabinet of P.L. Muller, from whom this print was acquired, would have been a treasure trove of exotic and unusual objects, showcasing the natural world's diversity and complexity. The intricate details of the engraving, from the individual hairs on the antelope's muzzle to the textured patterns on the civet's coat, are a testament to the artistry and precision of the engraver. The use of hand-coloring further enhances the realism and beauty of the image, making it a stunning addition to any collection of natural history or art. This print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when the natural world was a source of endless fascination and discovery. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating the diversity of life on our planet.
