Heelsum Airborne Memorial, Market Garden, Holland

This originally simple Memorial erected by residents of Heelsum in 1945 has steadily become more professional over the years, but it still retains an impression of having been put together from battlefield remnants - which it was. Sadly, many of its original components, parachute containers, shell cases, helmets etc have vanished. In 1994 it was restored and new plaques and explanatory boards installed. A modified six-pounder gun still remains at the centre. The inscripition reads, Heelsum. In this place landed 1st Airborne Division on 17 September at 1 o clock. The time referred to is Dutch time which was one hour behind the time used by the troops. In the fields just north of Heelsum were DZ X where 1st Para Brigade landed on 17 September and LZ X where the 1st and 4th Brigade gliders arrived on the 18th. Date: 2000

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photo captures the Heelsum Airborne Memorial in Holland, a poignant tribute to the brave soldiers of the 1st Airborne Division who landed in the area on September 17, 1944, during Operation Market Garden. The memorial, located in Heelsum, was originally erected by local residents in the aftermath of the battle using battlefield remnants such as parachute containers, shell cases, and helmets. Over the years, the memorial has undergone restoration, becoming more professional but still retaining an impression of its humble beginnings. At the center of the memorial stands a modified six-pounder gun, a reminder of the fierce fighting that took place during the battle. The inscription on the memorial reads, "Heelsum. In this place landed 1st Airborne Division on 17 September at 1 o'clock." It's important to note that the Dutch time used at the time was one hour behind the time used by the troops, making the landing an hour earlier than stated on the memorial. The fields just north of Heelsum were the sites of DZ X, where the 1st Para Brigade landed on September 17, and LZ X, where the 1st and 4th Brigade gliders arrived on September 18. This memorial is a testament to the courage and sacrifice of the Allied forces during World War II and serves as a reminder of the pivotal role Holland played in the campaign. The photo was taken in the year 2000.
