EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, created by Karl Joseph Brodtmann in 1836 for Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals, showcases three fascinating and distinctly different mammals: the Hog Badger (Arctonyx collaris, 1), the Sunda Stink Badger (Mydaus javanensis, 2), and the Wolverine (Gulo gulo, 3). The Hog Badger, also known as the Asian Hog-nosed Badger, is a large, powerful, and omnivorous creature native to Southeast Asia. With its distinctive hog-like snout and stocky body, it is well adapted to digging in the ground for food, using its strong forelimbs to uncover roots, insects, and small animals. The Sunda Stink Badger, also known as the Javan Stink Badger, is a smaller, more elusive member of the badger family. It is native to the forests of Southeast Asia and is easily identified by its strong, musky odor, which it uses as a defense mechanism. Its long, slender snout is also an adaptation for digging, allowing it to excavate burrows in the soft, moist soil. The Wolverine, a powerful predator native to the northern hemisphere, is the largest land carnivore in North America and Europe. With its short legs, powerful limbs, and sharp claws, it is well adapted to navigating rugged terrain and taking down prey much larger than itself. This fierce animal is also known for its tenacity and ability to kill prey much larger than itself, earning it the nickname 'glutton for bear.' Brodtmann's meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the unique characteristics of each animal make this lithograph a remarkable piece of zoological art. It provides a window into the natural world of the past and serves as a reminder of the incredible diversity of mammals that inhabit our planet.
