EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a proud Houdan or Poule de Houdan cock and hen, showcasing their distinctive and exotic plumage. Bred by the esteemed Robert B. Wood, the Houdan cock was a champion in its time, winning first prizes at the Birmingham, Crystal Palace, and Manchester shows in 1870. The hen, equally admired for her beautiful appearance, was also a prized addition to any poultry collection. The Houdan breed, Gallus gallus domesticus, was a popular obsession during the Victorian era, fueling a craze for ornithology and poultry breeding. The intricate patterns on their feathers, reminiscent of a marbled cake, were a sight to behold and a source of great pride for breeders. This beautiful illustration, created by J.W. Ludlow and published in Lewis Wright's The Illustrated Book of Poultry in 1890, is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and dedication to preserving the unique characteristics of this breed. Chromolithographs, such as this one produced by Vincent Brooks Day & Son, were a popular medium for recording and sharing the beauty of these birds, often used as decorative pieces in Victorian homes. Despite their ornamental value, it is important to note that the Houdan breed, like many others, has a complex history. While they were admired for their appearance, they were also used for cockfighting, a controversial practice that was popular during this time. The fever for collecting and exhibiting exotic birds, like the Houdan, was a double-edged sword, leading to both admiration and exploitation.
