The Fisherman's Mishap
EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming and humorous illustration, published in 1838, depicts a moment of unexpected excitement during a day of fishing. The scene features a determined fisherman, dressed in the typical attire of the early Victorian era, with a serious expression on his face as he focuses intently on the water. His arms are fully extended, holding a long fishing rod, and his body is slightly bent as he leans over the edge of a tree-lined bank. Suddenly, the branch he is standing on gives way, and the fisherman is sent tumbling into the water. His surprised expression turns to one of alarm as he realizes the impending splash. His arms, still holding the fishing rod, are raised in a desperate attempt to break his fall. The tree branches behind him are a stark contrast to the calm water below, adding a touch of whimsy to the scene. This humorous illustration, created using a crowquill pen and ink, is a delightful reminder of the unpredictable nature of fishing and the importance of staying focused, even in the face of unexpected challenges. The illustration, first published in the 1830s, is a testament to the enduring appeal of the sport and the human spirit. This print is part of the extensive collection of historical illustrations available at Mary Evans Picture Library, providing a rich visual resource for researchers, educators, and anyone interested in the history of art and culture.
