EDITORS COMMENTS
An Incident in the Attack on Bomarsund, Crimean War, 21 June 1854: A Heroic Sailor's Bravery in the Face of Danger This powerful image captures an incident during the fierce attack on Bomarsund Fortress in the Crimean War on 21 June 1854. The Crimean War, which lasted from 1853 to 1856, was a significant conflict between Russia and an alliance of European powers, including Britain and France, over territorial disputes and political influence in the region. In this photograph, we see a sailor, identified as Charles Davis Lucas, in the midst of the chaos and danger of the battle. A shell has landed on board his ship, and with quick thinking and incredible courage, Lucas picks up the explosive and throws it back overboard. The image captures the moment before the shell explodes, with Lucas's determined expression and the tense, anxious faces of his comrades around him. Lucas's heroic act saved his ship and the lives of his crew. For his bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for valor in the British military. The Victoria Cross was established in 1856, so Lucas was one of the first recipients of this prestigious award. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the sailors and soldiers who fought in the Crimean War, and of the dangerous conditions they faced in the Baltic Sea during the 1850s. The image captures a moment of heroism and danger, and serves as a testament to the bravery and determination of those who served in the navy during this pivotal period in history.
