EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Jean Lambert Tallien: Deputy to the National Convention and Accompanier of Napoleon to Egypt" This handcoloured lithograph depicts Jean Lambert Tallien (1769-1820), a significant figure during the French Revolution and a close associate of Napoleon Bonaparte. Tallien is shown here in the attire of a deputy to the National Convention, the French legislative assembly established in 1792 following the fall of the Bourbon monarchy. Tallien's career began in the legal profession, but he soon became involved in revolutionary politics. In 1792, he was elected to the National Convention, where he advocated for the execution of King Louis XVI. His influence continued to grow, and in 1798, he accompanied Napoleon on the campaign to Egypt as a member of the scientific commission. The scientific commission was established to study the natural history, geography, and antiquities of Egypt. However, Tallien's primary role was to serve as Napoleon's political advisor and to maintain French control over the region. During his time in Egypt, he played a crucial role in the establishment of the French occupation government and the suppression of local rebellions. This striking image, taken from Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France," captures Tallien's distinguished appearance and his important role in French history. The lithograph's intricate details and vibrant colors bring the past to life, transporting us back to a time of revolution, exploration, and political upheaval. Jean Lambert Tallien's story is a testament to the turbulent and transformative period of the French Revolution, a time when individuals like him played a pivotal role in shaping the course of history. This print serves as a visual reminder of the complexities and intrigues of that era.
