Lambert Simnel working in the Royal Kitchens

Lambert Simnel (circa 1477circa 1525) - pretender to the throne of England. His claim to be Edward Plantagenet, 17th Earl of Warwick, in 1487 threatened the newly-established reign of King Henry VII. Simnel became the figurehead of a Yorkist rebellion organised by John de la Pole, Earl of Lincoln, a rebellion which was crushed in 1487. Simnel was pardoned and was thereafter employed by the Royal household as a scullion (as pictured in this illustration), and, later, as a falconer.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing illustration from the 1490s, Lambert Simnel, the controversial figure who once challenged the throne of England, is depicted as a humble kitchen boy in the Royal Household. Born around 1477, Simnel claimed to be Edward Plantagenet, the 17th Earl of Warwick, and in 1487, he became the figurehead of a Yorkist rebellion, threatening the newly-established reign of King Henry VII. The rebellion, organized by John de la Pole, Earl of Lincoln, was a bold attempt to overthrow the Tudor monarch. However, the rebellion was swiftly crushed, and Simnel was captured. Instead of facing the consequences of his actions, he was granted a pardon and found employment in the very place he once sought to conquer – the Royal Household. In this image, Simnel is shown kneeling by the fire in the kitchen, turning a meat spit with a determined expression on his face. The kitchen, with its hearth and range, is bustling with activity, as other kitchen boys and servants go about their tasks. Simnel's transformation from a pretender to the throne to a scullion in the Royal Kitchens is a fascinating reminder of the complexities of medieval power dynamics. Despite his humble appearance, it is impossible not to wonder what thoughts may be going through Simnel's mind as he turns the spit. Was he still harboring dreams of regaining the throne, or had he truly accepted his new role in the Royal Household? Regardless, this illustration offers a unique glimpse into the life of a historical figure whose story continues to captivate scholars and history enthusiasts alike.
